General Description (概要)
The course will look at how religion can be both a source of conflict and security with reference to the Global South.

このコースは、どのように宗教が、紛争や安全保障の両方の要因になりうるのかを途上国を題材に考察する。

This course begins by setting out the theoretical foundations for the study of a 'post-secular' approach to Human Security, dealing with the transformative effects of globalization on identity, violence and security. The second part of the course then draws on different sites of human insecurity around the globe to develop these ideas, examining themes such as:

1. The rise of exclusivist ethno-religious identities;
2. Their impact upon ethnic, religious, national, gender and sexual minorities;
3. The securitization of religious symbols;
4. The retreat from multiculturalism post 9/11.

Learning Goals(学習目標)
1. To introduce students to theories of globalization, identity-formation and Human security
2. To allow students to apply the theories studies to an empirical case study of their choice.
3. To get students to critically examine the role of religion in International Politics.
