General Description (概要)
Deepening the study of international law on the basis of the achievements acquired in International Law I.

国際法Iの基礎の上に、現代国際法学の高度な課題を扱う。


This course is to deepen the understanding of public international law (IL), taking up the traditional to the contemporary controversial issues from the legal point of view. The course covers the basic principles and regulations under IL, and on to apply these laws to the international courts’ cases as well as situations concerned to the international community. The course addresses ‘peaceful settlement of disputes’ as a central issue in international law and the specific branch of international law, for example international humanitarian law, human rights law, refugee law, and others environmental law and European law on request.



 
Learning Goals(学習目標)
1. Review the framework of IL, analysing from the legal point of view.
2. Identify how IL applies to the contemporary issues.
3. Understand the specific branch of international law and EU law.

1st and 2nd day: Introduction of the class

Q1.Is international law really 'law'?
Reviews of the functions of International Law

3/4 Peaceful Settlement of disputes / ICJ
5/6 Use of force / collective self-defense/UN+ sanctions
7/8 International humanitarian law/International criminal law
9/10 International Refugee Law: International Protection
11/12 International Refugee Law: Asylum
13/14 International Human Rights Law:
15/16 International Human Rights Law
17/18 International Environmental law or European Law
Submit a resarch report (a short essay in 3000 to 4000 words)

・One or two topics (depending on number of students) are assigned for student’s presentation in the class, and later select one of them for their final report (essay). Some topics listed-above might be changed if a student has a particularly interesting topic i.e. international environmental law. On the 1st day of the class, I will ask you which topics you are interested in most and preferable date for your presentation in a class.

2. The instructor will inform students about the details of the grading policy,how to take lectures, and when and how to make presentations at the beginning of the class.
