General Description (概要)
This course will examine the ways in which the discipline of anthropology has researched and conceptualized the origins, practice and consequences of violence in human societies. It will deeply explore the questions of whether violence is something that is innate in the human species or fostered through social and cultural mechanisms and what the social, cultural, and personal consequences of violence have been in human societies.

One universal feature of all human societies is the existence of violence. Despite hopes to the contrary, a truly non-violent human society has yet to emerge. This course’s purpose is to examine some of the ways in which the discipline of anthropology can enhance our understanding of the origins, nature, and consequences of human violence. The course is divided into two parts. Part I examines evidence from primatology, archeology, and ethnographic studies of simple societies in order to understand the nature and frequency of violence in human history and non-state societies. Part II explores a series of topics that will help students develop a set of theoretical tools for developing their own analyses of violence. In these cases, we will examine the social and cultural values and practices that allow, encourage, or tolerate the existence of violence in different societies. Through this course, students will not only become familiar with anthropological approaches to violence, they will also acquire a set of tools through which they can begin to analyze and unravel this troubling aspect of human life.
