General Description (概要)

This course focuses on demographic issues from anthropological perspectives.Students will learn basic concepts and indicators in demography as well as the cultural meanings of the demographic phenomena in particular societies.
人口に関する問題を人類学の視点から学ぶ。人口の分野における基本的な概念や指標について学ぶと同時に、人口現象の特定社会における文化的意味についても考察する。
In this class, such population events as births, deaths, and migrations are examined from both anthropological and demographic perspectives. The class focuses on the inter-relationship between people’s behaviors at the micro-level and macro population dynamics. We will also discuss how demographic behaviors are influenced by cultural values and local practices. The class aims to help students gain a basic understanding of population issues in a cultural context and apply the knowledge in their daily lives.
この授業では、ヒトの出生、死亡、移動に関して文化的および人口学的観点から考察する。ミクロレベルでの人々の行動とマクロレベルでの人口構造がどのように相互に影響を与えあっているか、また、人間の行動パターンがいかに文化的価値観や慣習に影響されているかについて検討する。人口に関わる主要概念と専門用語を理解するとともにそれらの知識を現実生活に応用する姿勢も培っていく。 コース全般を通して、時事問題を随時取り上げながら人口人類学の見地より積極的なディスカッションを行う予定である。

Grading Policy(成績評価基準)

1. 出席と授業参加 attendance and participation 10 %
2. ファイナルペーパー final paper 30%
3. グループプレゼンテーション group presentation 20 %
4. 中間テスト（資料持込み可) in-class midterm exam (open-book) 30 %
5. 反転授業クイズ flipped-class quizzes 10%
試験期間中のファイナルは行わない。Final Exam will not be held during the final examination week.
