Analysis of historical development, the characteristics of change, and the present state of Asian society and culture.
アジアの社会と文化の歴史的発展，変動の特徴，現状等を分析する。
This course considers Hong Kong and related areas in East and Southeast Asia from the perspective of cultural/social anthropology to learn how anthropological approaches are relevant not only to analyze so-called "traditional" societies but to think about issues we are facing today in Hong Kong, Japan and other places in Asia. By taking up various everyday issues in contemporary Hong Kong, from dating to demonstration, this course covers a wide spectrum of subjects in anthropology, including relatively classical themes such as "purity and impurity," "gift economies," "witchcraft and sorcery," as well as more recent topics like "media," "invented tradition," and "affect/emotion." Students are expected not just to passively learn new cases and theoretical perspectives, but also to foster the ability to apply them to think critically about their own culture and society.
本講義では，香港と東アジア・東南アジアの関連地域を文化・社会人類学の視点から取り上げることで，人類学的アプローチがいわゆる「伝統社会」のみならず，香港・日本を含めたアジア諸地域の今日的課題を考察する上でも有益であることを学んでいく。デートからデモまで，今日の香港のさまざまな日常的事例を扱いながら，「ケガレ」「贈与」「呪術」といった比較的古典的な主題から，「メディア」「創造された伝統」「情動／感情」といったより新しいトピックまで，人類学の多様な議題が取り上げられる。受講者は新たな事例や理論的視座を単に受動的に学ぶだけでなく，それを用いて自社会，自文化を批判的に考察する能力を育むことが期待される。

Learning Goals(学習目標)
|

The purpose of this course are is to enable students to:
(1) deeply understand Hong Kong society/culture through its historical changes and regional relationships,
(2) learn various scopes and perspectives of social /cultural anthropology, and
(3) acquire a new point of view to think critically about their own society /culture

Contents(内容)
|
|
In this course, students will be required to
- read assigned reading materials before each class
- submit comment sheets after each class
- take part in one of the group presentations (and following discussion)
- submit term paper at the end of the term
Each 5-7 Class will be consisted of three parts: reviewing students' comments from last week (5th), group presentation and discussion based on the reading assignment (6th), and follow-up comments from the instructor with the introduction of related cases for further consideration or the topic for the next week (7th).
Studnets' will, therefore, take part in the following learning activities in each week:
(1) Think about a given topic on their own and submit the comment sheet (after the class in the previous week)
(2) See other students' comments to learn about different perspectives (5th)
(3) Understand related anthropological theories from the reading assignment (6th)
(4) Think about the topic again based on (2) and (3) (7th)
By repeating these processes throughout the term ??? two weeks for each topic, 4 topics in total ??? students will be expected to learn about cases from Hong Kong and other regions in Asia, understand basic anthropological theories, and apply both of them to think critically about their own cultures and societies.

学生に課される課題は以下の通りです
・毎回の授業開始までのリーディング課題の閲読
・授業後のコメントシートの提出
・学期に1度のグループプレゼン＆ディスカッションの担当
・学期末の期末レポートの提出
各回の567限の授業は、前回の受講生コメントのまとめ（5限）、リーディング課題に基づくグループプレゼンとディスカッション（6限）、補足の解説や次回以降の事例紹介（7限）などの3部から構成されます。
つまり学生は、週ごとに以下のようなプロセスを経ることになります。
（1）まずは与えられたトピックについて自分なりに思考し、コメントを提出する（前回7限終了後）
（2）他の学生のコメントを読んで、別の考え方を知る（5限）
（3）リーディング課題から関連する人類学理論を学ぶ（6限）
（4）それらをふまえて再びそのトピックについて考え直してみる（7限）
これらのプロセスを、4つのトピックについて、それぞれに2週間ずつかけて繰り返すことで、香港やアジア各地の事例を学び、人類学理論を理解し、それを用いて自文化を批判的に考察する力を身につけることが期待されます。
