General Description (概要)
In this course students will learn about contemporary social issues in the United States of America. These issues include economic inequality, race/ethnic relations, family issues, crime and other social issues.

現代アメリカにおける社会問題について学ぶ。具体的には、経済格差、人種・民族問題、家族、犯罪などの諸問題を取り扱う。


Mode of Teaching: In person, face to face instruction.
Online Course Tools used: Zoom software, and course information on Moodle.

This course provides an introduction to sociology and social science through the study of prominent social problems in the United States. We will examine a diverse sample of social problems, and analyze issues of power, inequality, privilege and oppression. Topics include social stratification/inequality, crime and deviance, culture, health, environment, immigration, education, racial/ethnic conflict, gender inequality, and technology work. We will explore America's importance and uniqueness by examining both its problems and solutions to important trends in society.

Learning Goals(学習目標)
Students will be able to:
1. Examine the social structures and inequalities that contribute to social problems.
2. Analyze how the American economic and political systems contribute to social problems.
3. Assess the uniqueness of America and why it matters on the global stage.
4. Discuss issues of global warming, pollution and environmental racism.
5. Examine the continuing issues of racism, ethnic inequality and immigration.
6. Analyze issues of access to political, economic and social opportunities.
7. Examine crime and its causes; assess the problems associated with the exploding prison population on society.
8. Discuss the persistent problems of unequal access to quality education, health care, and financial anxiety
9. Analyze causes and costs of war, terrorism and the military-industrial complex.
10. Compare and contrast rapidly changing family forms and relationships
