General Description (概要)

This course focuses on critical analysis of media messages and impacts of various media including TV, music videos, newspapers, advertisements, websites, and social media on children and youth. It aims to empower students to explore, understand, analyze and control the effects of mass and digital media on young people and themselves.
テレビや、音楽ビデオ、新聞、広告、ウェブサイト、ソーシャルメディアを含む様々なメディアの子どもと若者へのメッセージや影響について批判的に考察する。学生が、若者一般や自らに対するマスメディアやデジタルメディアの影響を探索、理解、分析、そして制御することができるような力を身につけることを目指す。
Media affects how we perceive the world and people. With media becoming so prevalent and powerful in our society, and with student access to computers and the Internet expanding so fast in homes and schools, "media literacy" is becoming the basic form of literacy to provide lifelong empowerment to both the student and the citizen. This course will provide students with the opportunity to develop their understanding of the complex functions of the media, including magazines, TV, music, smart phones, video games and the Internet in the context of education, with emphasis on critical analysis and production of selected media.

Learning Goals(学習目標)

Objectives of this course are to help students:
1) improve critical thinking on media by analyzing various sources of information and examining messages behind the media (i.e. TV shows and news, advertisements, music videos, social media and the Internet) 2) develop skills to be a sensible creator of media (i.e. advertisements) , and 3) be aware of importance of media literacy in education

Week 3: Dec. 19 Topic: Analyzing Media #2 Music (Bring two music videos/lyrics: one you like, one you dislike)
Week 4: Jan. 9 No class, holiday
Week 5: Jan. 16 (Due: Analysis Report 1) Topic: Analyzing Media #3 TV shows and news
Week 6: Jan. 23 Topic: Analyzing Media #4 Social Media and Websites

English will be used for lectures, discussions and other activities, assignments and tests. References written in Japanese can be used for assignments.

Grading Policy(成績評価基準)
|
|
1/2) Two Media Analysis Reports (20% X 2 -- 40%) # Report 1 - Choose one case from Music videos and Advertisements, and deconstruct the case; 1,500 words including references; Due: Jan. 16 midnight) # Report 2 - Choose one case from TV programs and Websites, and deconstruct the case; 1,500 words including references; Due: Jan. 30 midnight)
Key evaluation criteria include: No minor errors in writing, Applying analysis strategies learned in the class, Clear presentation of ideas, Critical analysis of the case, Good references (not quantity).
3) Advertisement Creation (40% - 20% Group Ad. Product / 20% Individual Report) - Group work. As a pair, develop an advertisement (a 1-2 min video ad. OR an ad. using Photoshop) to influence minds, attitudes or values of teenagers; AND write about a 1,000 word report explaining the ad creation process and what you have learned/experienced/felt. Details will be explained during the class)
Key evaluation criteria include: Visually appealing moving/still images and texts; Advertising techniques that you have chosen enhance the effect of your ad; Anticipated impacts on teenagers; Reflective thinking on the ad creation process; Your contribution to the group work.

## Extra credit for applying advanced production skills or creative ideas in advertisement (up to 10%)

Notes(注意事項)

1) Attendance is required. Because active participation is crucial for student learning, students are required to attend all the classes and to log in to the Moodle site regularly. In principle, after three absences you automatically fail the course. It is the student’s responsibility to discuss a make-up plan with the instructor regarding any missed work after being absent. 2) Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty will be punished according to School regulations. 3) Incomplete or late assignment will result in a one point penalty per day.
