General Description (概要)

This is a foundation course into peace and conflict studies. It will give students an overview of a variety of theories, approaches, and methodology in order to better understand the current international and domestic environment in war-prone countries and regions in order to develop solutions for conflicts. The course will also improve methodological and report writing skills.
平和と紛争研究における基礎コースである。紛争の解決方法を生み出すため、紛争がちな国々や地域における国際/国内環境についての理解を深め、様々な理論やアプローチ、方法論の概観を学ぶ。また、このコースでは方法論的能力及びレポート作成能力の向上も図る。
As a foundation course for the peace studies program, this graduate seminar critically examines key approaches and concepts in peace and conflict studies. The first part of the course discusses the multidimensional concepts of peace and conflict. The second part critically examines the competing theories and explanations of war and conflict. The third part of the course examines conflict resolution practices and interventions.
平和研究専修分野の平和と紛争研究に関する専門基礎科目である。紛争の解決方法を生み出すため、紛争国や紛争地域における国際/国内環境についての理解を深め、様々な理論的概念やアプローチ、方法論を概観する。また、この科目では調査分析レポート作成能力の向上も図る

Learning Goals(学習目標)

The course learning goals are:
1. To obtain an advanced overview of the key concepts and theories in the field of peace and conflict studies;
2. To develop the research design for their independent study of selected topics of relevance to peace and conflict studies; and
3. To relate academic study to questions of practical concern in global, regional, national, or local contexts by producing a well-documented, critical research paper.
