General Description (概要)
This is a foundation course into peace and conflict studies. It will give students an overview of a variety of theories, approaches, and methodology in order to better understand the current international and domestic environment in war-prone countries and regions in order to develop solutions for conflicts. The course will also improve methodological and report writing skills.

This course will first give an introduction into peace and security studies, the questions it asks, the concepts it has developed, and why they are important and useful to better understand and analyze actual and potential conflicts and traditional and non-traditional security threats, particularly after the end of the Cold-War. The course will use contemporary security and conflict cases and introduces analytical tools and theories to better understand these cases. It wants to introduce important ideas, theories, and methods used in peace studies, so that you can use them for a particular case. You should therefore choose a peace and security issue that particularly interests you, so that you can write a research paper on this case using some of the approaches outlined in this class. The class is, therefore, less interested in giving an overview about individual cases of wars and conflicts (although examples will be used) but how to better understand them in order to propose solutions or reasons why existing solutions are insufficient. By the end of the class, you should write a well-documented analytical paper about a case of your choice. Ideally, the paper should be good enough so that after some editorial work, it could be published. It is indeed my hope, that some papers would be considered for publications in a journal or book project. For this purpose, the class offers one research design workshop (session 7), so that you can introduce the case you are writing about and critically evaluate your approach using social-scientific research theories and methodologies.
