General Description (概要)

This course is designed to acquaint beginning students with the basic content and methodology of contemporary psychology as an academic pursuit and as a profession. Psychology as a scientific and humanistic enterprise is the integrating theme of the course. Applications of psychological knowledge and methods to many problems of widespread human concern are addressed as time and circumstances warrant.
心理学に初めて触れる学生のために学問としての現代心理学の基礎とその方法を解説するコース。人間性と科学としての心理学を統一テーマとして、人間にかかわる広くさまざまな関心を心理学の理論と方法によって展開していく。
This course is designed to survey the basic content and methodology of contemporary psychology. While psychology as a scientific and humanistic enterprise will be the underlying theme of the course, the field of psychology will be approached from the perspectives of the contribution that it makes to the solution of many problems facing society at large.
このコースでは、現代心理学の基礎的内容と研究方法を概観する。科学、また人文学としての心理学という学問がこのコースの基本的主題であるが、心理学的知見や方法論が現代社会の諸問題の解決にどのように貢献できるのかという視点からもアプローチを試みる。

Learning Goals(学習目標)

In this course, we will survey major topics of psychology. This course is not intended simply for you to accumulate pieces of knowledge about contemporary psychology. Rather, it is our hope to make this course an opportunity for you to explore the field of psychology and to learn some basic skills in logical thinking and scientific research.
このコースは、単に現代心理学の知識を学ぶだけでなく、むしろこのコースを通して心理学という学問分野はどんなものかを探索し、論理的思考力、科学的研究の能力の基礎を養うことを目標とする。

Week one: Psychology as a discipline (All)
Week two: Knowing the world: Sensation and perception 1 (Morishima)
Week three: Learning - classical conditioning, operant conditioning (Morishima)
Week four: Making sense of the world: Basic cognitive processes - memory (Morishima)
Week five: Making sense of the world: Higher-level cognitive processes concept formation, categorization, knowledge representation, decision making, reasoning, creativity, etc. (Morishima)
Week six: Biological bases of behavior: Basic structure and function of the human nervous system, mind/body problem, etc. (Naoi)
Week seven: Motivation & Emotion (Morishima)

Week nine: Social Psychology (Smith)
