Learning Goals(学習目標)
Familiarise with Japanese literary styles and learn the ways to analyse modern Japanese literature. You will learn about Japanese history, culture and society from Meiji era to today. You will also learn how historical events affect the way literature is written. We are going to read texts that were produced in the turbulent historical periods, when Japan went through massive changes. Therefore, students are expected to investigate not only literature, but also historical background and cultural background.

Your own initiatives in learning are strongly advised. Literature courses are not about a distribution of correct answers. What you learn from this course is how you approach a literary text and how you try to find your own interpretation by research and by exchanging opinions with other students.

You will also learn how to write a literary analysis paper. Although some aspects are specific to literary analysis, the learning may also be useful in any academic writing. You will learn how to structure your paper, how to support your argument, how you write in academic manner, and how to do proper citations and referencing.

Notes(注意事項)
This course is NOT AT ALL an easy class, it is carried out entirely in English and the level of discussion is quite intensive and high. Although students with all English-level are welcome, you will need a command of English good enough to read literary stories, write papers and participate in discussion in English. You need to read each story and to try to analyze it BEFORE the session, and you are required to submit the reaction form before each class. In the class, one or two students make presentations, and you are expected to respond to them and share your thoughts and analyses with other students. Your participation is strongly REQUIRED. Class participation means joining the discussion, not just sitting in the class.

It is without saying that we follow ICU policy on Academic Integrity. Plagiarism is strictly forbidden and if found the writer of that paper will fail the course, and may face more severe consequences.
