General Description (概要)

An introduction to the study methods and masterworks of East Asian art. The major focus will be on the arts of China, but within a broader Asian context that will include India, Korea and Japan.
東アジアの美術作品及び、その研究方法についての概説。主に中国美術を扱うが、インド、朝鮮、日本の作品例も含まれる。
Style of the course: ONLINE(interactive). Enter the class from the link put on the Moodle.
Structure of this course (combination of lecture, discussion, presentation and report) will be explained in detail at the first session. Those who have enrolled (and those who are thinking of enrollment) this course, are recommended to attend the first session (11:30am, Monday, September 5).

Contents of the course:
- This course is an introduction to study of East Asian Art. Each session explains meaning and expression of masterworks created from the ancient to modern era of East Asia, particularly about Chinese and Korean art.
- The aims of the course are, acquiring basic knowledge and understanding the structure of East Asian art from art historical points of view, and learning practical method of studying on East Asian Art.
- Although this course mainly consists of informative lectures, several times of group-discussions, and a personal presentation are to be scheduled during the course.
- For studying Japanese art, influence and relationship with the continent is indispensable to understand. Those who intend to study Japanese art are recommended to take this course.
授業形態：オンライン（ライブです）。 Moodleに貼ったリンクから入室してください。
授業の構成（講義、ディスカッション、個人プレゼンテーション）の詳細は初回のセッションで説明しますので、受講を決めた学生あるいは受講するかどうかを考えている学生には、初回セッション（9月5日, 11：30）の出席を推奨します。

本コースの内容：
- 東アジア美術を学ぶための入門コースです。授業では、古代から近代に至る東アジア各時代を代表する造形をとりあげ、その意味や表現を説明します。授業の中心は中国美術となります。
- 本コースの目的は、東アジア美術に関する基本的な知識を得ること、美術史から見た東アジアの文化的構造を理解することにあります。
- 本コースは、知識習得型の講義になりますが、コース中には数回のグループ・ディスカッションや、個人プレゼンテーションの時間を設けます。
- 日本美術を学ぶうえで、大陸からの影響や関係性を知ることは不可欠な要素です。日本美術を学ぼうとする学生には、本コースの受講を推奨します。

Learning Goals(学習目標)
|
|
- Deepening knowledge and comprehension about East Asian Art, familiar with various types of masterworks, together with their historical and cultural background.
- Acquire basic knowledge and improve the ways of research for understanding physical techniques and materials, and symbolic or iconological meaning of Asian artworks.
- Executing various works requested in the course, the students will obtain a practical skill of research, think, and write about East Asian art.
- 東アジアの歴史や文化の中で生まれた多様な造形に親しみ、その歴史的・文化的背景とともに東アジア美術に関する理解と造詣を深める。
- 作品の制作技法や素材、また象徴性やその意味に関する基礎知識を学び、学習段階を向上させる。
- 本コースでのさまざまな課題を遂行することにより、東アジア美術に関する知識や思考の成果をレポートにまとめるスキルを習得する。

Contents(内容)
|
|
Following themes are to be lectured through the course (title and order may be changed):
1. Bronze and lacquer work developed in ancient China
2. Diffusion and transformation of Buddhist art from India to China, Korea and Japan, through the Silk Road
3. Mural painting and sculpture from the stone caves in China
4. Art in Tang dynasty, China
5. Chinese paintings from polychrome work by court painters to monochrome work by literary artists
6. Ceramic art developed differently in China, Korean peninsula and Japan
7. Song and Yuan culture introduced into Korean peninsula and Japan
- No examination.
- Students will be requested to send "keywords" indicated or spoken in every session, to the Moodle by the deadline (after each session).
Right keywords will be counted as "participation points" of each session (count should be started after the late registration period).
- Grade is judged based on the total points of participation, presentation and the final report.
本コースは、以下のテーマをとりあげる予定です（タイトルや順番は変更する場合があります）：
1. 古代中国で発達した青銅器と漆器
2．インドから中国・朝鮮半島・日本に伝播した仏教の美術
3. 中国石窟にみる壁画と彫刻
4．中国唐時代の美術
5. 中国絵画：宮廷画家による着彩画・文人画家が描く水墨画
6. 中国・朝鮮半島・日本に展開したやきものの技法と特色
7. 中国宋・元時代の文化、朝鮮半島・日本への伝播
- 試験はありません。
- 受講者は、各回の授業中に示される「キーワード」を、授業後の締切時刻までにMoodleに送信することが求められます。その内容をもって毎授業への「出席ポイント」がカウントされます（Late registration periodの後よりカウントを開始します）。
- 成績は、この出席ポイント、プレゼンテーション、そして期末レポートの総合点により評価されます。

Expected study hour outside class(授業時間外学習)

210 minutes per week.
Students are expected to review the contents of each session by slides (slides are open in the Moodle after each session) and do personal study by using reference materials in order to prepare own topic for group discussions and write own final report.

In case of missing a session owing to an unavoidable reason, such as bad Wi-Fi condition, the student should inform such obstacle to the instructor as soon as possible, either before or after the session, by e-mail. In case the instructor accepts the reason, please follow instructor's directions. Make-up quizzes or a report will be prepared for the student.
