General Description (概要)
A historical study of the origin and development of the understanding of different human rights in various societies and their application in the fields of law, politics, economics and social relations. It is primarily concerned with Human Rights in Japan and Asia.

諸国民(特に日本とアジア)における人権思想の発生と展開、およびその特質を思想史的に考察する。


Starting with the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action (VDPA, 1993) in mind, this course will explore the strong connection that exists between civil/political rights and Economic/Social/Cultural rights. This will be done by discussing in class a rights-based approach which look at two fields in which the two above mentioned categories of human rights play an interrelated role: community engagement & community development. By reflecting on current situations in both developed and developing countries, the course will be designed in a way in which students can gain a practical understanding of human rights.



 
Learning Goals(学習目標)
By looking at human rights from a practical perspective, students will (among others):
1. Understand the challenges of a representative democracy
2. Discover ways in which democracy can be redefined
3. Learn new methods of participatory democracy
4. Become familiar with concepts of social participation and inclusion
5. Master the practice of right-based community development
6. Think critically on how to alleviate poverty
7. Discover the connection between poverty and property rights.

・ Democracy, human rights, sustainability and development
・ Redefining Democracy
・ Participatory Democracy vs. Representative Democracy
・ Rights-based sustainable development
・ Property rights
・ Property rights and poverty reduction.
・ Presentations of case studies by students

Class participation 20%; Presentation 50%; Two Reports 30%

Readings for this course will be assigned to students week by week, so they will get materials for preparation to class discussion at least a week in advance.

In this class, active participation in discussions is highly appreciated. From the very beginning, students will be requested to work on a particular theme that will then become the subject of their presentation and final paper. Therefore, commitment is requested to each student from the first week.
