General Description (概要)
A theoretical and empirical study of sociological mechanisms which produce social deviates. Analysis of social structure as the basis of an evaluative framework concerning the pathological phenomena.

社会問題の分析の視座を理論的・概念的に明らかにする。また当該の社会問題に関わる政策が立案されるに至った背景と、その社会的影響に関して事例を通して学ぶ。

The course will address various dimensions of social problems both theoretically and empirically using mainly constructionist perspective. The course will also look into public policies related to social problems. After learning key concepts as “social problem”, “socialization”, “claims-making”, students will engage in “the social problems game.” Then we further study the theoretical base of thinking social problems, or the formation of a so-called social order, reading Adam Smith’s work on moral philosophy. In the second half of the term, we focus on problem solving, poverty alleviation in particular. Students are invited to one mountain village in an Asian country, virtually unfortunately, where they analyze the problems in that village and formulate the development project using PCM (Project Cycle Management) tools. After this practical exercise, we learn Amartya Sen’s capability approach. Throughout the course, students are expected to consider: i) whose social problems we address; ii) causes and consequences of them; and iii) what changes needed. The contents of the course are subject to change according to participants’ interests and progress.
