General Description (概要)
This course represents an offering in general on the mutual interactions between human beings and their environments, physical and social(including economic, political and religious contexts), natural and built. As this course is also designated as a core component of the Rotary World Peace programme offered, the course focuses in particular on how the environmental contexts in which people live relate to basic issues of peace, security and conviviality(kyosei). Environmental determinants of attitudes and behaviour which relate to issues of peace, security, and conflict are the major focus. Issues of group dynamics as they relate to prejudice, discrimination, racism, and conflict are explored. The psychological and physiological impacts of conflict and violence are examined. Strategies for avoiding or managing conflict are considered and ways of educating for a more peaceful world are evaluated from various psychological perspectives.

This course aims to offer a set of opportunities for students to explore the nexus between peace and psychology. The course presents various conceptual frameworks that explain socio-psychological aspects of intractable conflicts. For example, psychological processes and concepts such as de-humanization, victimhood, cognitive dissonance, frames, emotions, anger, fear, distrust, and reconciliation will be examined to understand the causes and dynamics of intractable conflicts. This course also provides the reality on the ground by offering some case studies and sharing the instructor's professional experience in working in the field of conflict resolution in Timor-Leste, Aceh (Indonesia), Mindanao (the Philippines) and elsewhere. The instructor's academic background revolves around the peace and conflict studies, focusing on conflict resolution, third party intervention, and peacebuilding. Hence, this course will not be limited only to the examination of psychological perspectives regarding intractable conflicts, but rather it offers a wider perspective related to peace such as politics, governance, human rights, international relations, international organizations, security and development. Thus, students who are not majoring psychology are welcome to join.
