General Description (概要)
Special advanced studies in selected areas of Gender and Queer Theory. The aim of this course is to strengthen students' knowledge in Gender and Sexuality Studies from the philosophical and aesthetical point of view.  Open to advanced students with the approval of the instructor.

ジェンダーとクイア理論の選択された分野における特別な高度な研究。 ジェンダーとセクシュアリティ研究における学生の知識を、哲学的、審美的な観点から強化することを目的とする。担当教員の受講許可を要する。


Special advanced studies in selected areas of Gender and Queer Theory.
The aim of this course is to strengthen students' knowledge in Gender and Sexuality Studies from the philosophical and aesthetical point of view.
This course also aims to strengthen students' knowledge in Gender and Queer Studies from a historical and a thematic perspective (with a special interest in the French Theory).

During AY2020, This course will be taught synchronously: we will meet online at designated times : Tue (3rd Period), Thu (2nd, 3rd Period).
During the “reading assignment” period, try to keep the same periods of time to work on the readings.

Learning Goals(学習目標)
1. To acquire better knowledge of Gender and Queer theories and technical terms (literary and philosophical terms).
2. To get a better understanding of Gender and Queer theories in a global World.
3. To get a better understanding of some of the issues in Gender and Queer theories in a daily life perspective.
4. To gain experience in oral presentation and written skills.




 
Contents(内容)
For AY2020, the schedule will be as follow:

Week 1: Reading assignment General Introduction to Queer Studies (Jagose)
Week 2: Reading assignment Genealogies of Gender and Queer theories (Foucault).
Week 3: Reading assignment Genealogies of Gender and Queer theories (Cixous) + Students self-introduction + Introduction to the class topic.
Week 4: Group discussion on the reading assignments + Genealogies of Gender and Queer theories (Derrida).
Week 5: Group discussion + Workshop on presentations.
Week 6: Gender and Queer theories (Fausto-Sterling + Butler/Sedgwick) + Workshop on presentations.
Week 7: Queer theory and Posthumanism (Haraway).
Week 8: Queer Theory and Japan.
Week 9: Students Presentations.
Week 10: Students Presentations.
Week 11: Students Presentations.

Grading Policy(成績評価基準)
Active Participation: 20% (This does NOT mean attendance); Presentation: 40% ; Final Paper: 40%.

Notes(注意事項)
Lectures, Readings, class discussions, exercices, presentations and written assignments will be in English, however, students may read the class texts translated from other languages in their original language.

Students are expected to read book chapters and papers prior to each class in order to fully grasp each week topic.
