General Description (概要)
Introduction to modern algebra. Includes group theory and ring theory. One period of lecture and two periods of recitation weekly. Prerequisite: Linear Algebra II. Recommended to be taken after BASIC CONCEPTS IN MATHEMATICS I.
We will study an introduction to Group Theory in Algebra I. A group is a beautiful fundamental algebraic structure with one binary operation. We will study rings with two algebraic operations in Algebra II, and we will apply Group Theory to rings.

Learning Goals(学習目標)
Understanding definitions, contents of theorems and proofs of them are essential in studying Mathematics. Through this course students will learn how to read and write proofs of basic properties of groups by starting from only definitions and/or appropriately quoting theorems. Students will know several examples of groups and will be able to apply theorem of groups in concrete examples.

Textbooks are available at ICU Bookstore in mid April. (4月中旬入荷予定、予価:7,593円) My home page below contains useful information of this course.
Language of Instruction: Most of the lectures may be given inEnglish and, textbook, blackboard writings, assignments, final will be in English. At recitations, homework and final, students are strongly recommended to write in English. However, students are allowed to ask questions in Japanese and the instructor may add extra explanation in Japanese.
