General Description (概要)

This course will provide an introduction to critical issues in anthropology such as the study of culture, power, gender, class, race, and the state. The course aims to illustrate the usefulness of basic anthropological concepts and approaches for the study of contemporary cultural issues.
人類学における現代的課題である文化、権力、ジェンダー、人種、国家などについて分析し、人類学の概念とアプローチの有効性を紹介する。
This course provides with an introduction to socio-cultural anthropology based on two major questions:
1) How and to what extent is anthropology effective in analyzing critical issues, including “race”, states,
tradition, gender, the "West" VS. the "Others" or globalization, in the (late/high/post-) modern world?
2) What are the critical issues of anthropology as an academic discipline?
Besides lectures by the instructor, students will experience writing culture through assignments.
社会-文化人類学の入門コース。以下二点を主な問いとする。
１）近現代 (modern)、後期近代 (late/high modernity)、ポストモダン(post-modern)などと呼ばれる今日、
世界における重要な諸問題（人種、国家、伝統、ジェンダー、「西洋」VS.「その他」、グローバリゼーションなど）
を考えるにあたり、人類学はどのように、またはどれほど有効なのか。
２）今日の人類学という学問自体が抱える重要な問題とはどのようなものか。
講義が中心だが、受講生にはペーパー執筆を通して「文化を語る・書く」経験もしてもらう。

Learning Goals(学習目標)
|

Students are expected to learn:
1) Anthropological mindset of “making the familiar unfamiliar, and making the unfamiliar familiar” in daily life;
2) (Self-) critical mindset towards the risk of writing culture and thereby (re-) producing biased world views.
１）身の回りの出来事、他者、自己について「自文化を異文化のように、異文化を自文化のように」見るセンスを身に着けてほしい。
２）「文化を書く」という行為そのものが、偏った世界観を（再）生産していないかという（自己）批判を身に着けてほしい。

Grading Policy(成績評価基準)
|

1.学期末試験：50%
2.レポート：50%：
①指定された英語の読み物のうち一篇を読む。
②読み物への批判に基づき、文献調査やミニ・フィールドワーク、グループ発表などを行う。
③ペーパーを書く。
1. Final exam: 50%
2. Paper: 50%
1) Read one of designated readings;
2) Conduct a small fieldwork and other research, and class presentation by group;
3) Write a paper.

Notes(注意事項)

・毎回コメントシートの提出をもって「出席」とカウントする。
・7回欠席した者は、期末試験を受ける資格を失い、自動的に「Ｅ」の評価を受ける。
それに近い欠席回数の者も、同様の評価か、または追加課題を受ける場合がある。
・グループワークを欠席すると、欠席2回分としてカウントされる。
・出席回数は、成績評価に直接は加算されない。
・コメントシートはMoodle Onlineを通して、毎回の授業後に送信してください。
・このコースは日本語で行います。資料には多くの英語を含みます。コメントシート、課題、テストは、日英語どちらで書いても結構です。
-Comment sheets are counted for attendance.
-Students who missed 7 classes will lose qualification to sit for the final exam, automatically getting "E".
-Students who missed nearly 7 classes may get the same grade or must write extra assignments.
-Missing one group work day counts as missing two classes.
-Just attending classes does not make additional points to the final grade.
-Please submit your comment sheet through Moodle Online after each class.
-This course is offered in Japanese. Materials include English texts. You can write comment sheets, assignments and the exam either in English or Japanese.
