General Description (概要)
This course looks at the theory of pronunciation and the practical skills required in its teaching. Students will gain knowledge of articulatory phonetics and its application in the language classroom.

言語教育に携わるものとして必要な音声学と音韻論を学ぶ。外国語教育の現場で必要とされる発音の指導方法を身につけ、理論と実践の結びつけを目指す。

This class will be geared towards helping you understand PHONETICS and PHONOLOGY as they apply to language learning and teaching. Phonetics and phonology, or the study of human speech sounds and sound systems, are the foundation of all study of language. Because this class is taught in English, we will start with English pronunciation but will contrast this with Japanese and other languages. Students will have the opportunity to explore the common pronunciation difficulties that speakers of particular languages (such as Chinese, French, German, Korean, Thai, and any language of interest) can have when speaking English or Japanese.

In order to be an informed language teacher, one must understand the sound system not only of one's own native tongue but also that of other languages. You will learn to describe and classify virtually all the sounds that can be produced by the human vocal tract. The Edinburgh Practical Phonetics videotape will introduce and help you master the International Phonetic Alphabet. The purpose of this course is to give you the opportunity to experience the various 'sounds' in human languages. Such knowledge is indispensable to those who have to work with language, such as students of linguistics, teachers of reading and writing, teachers of the deaf, the hearing-impaired themselves who may be striving to acquire intelligible speech, actors, singers, speech language pathologists, audiologists and many others. In this class, you will also explore your own speech and learn how to produce different accents.
