Music of Japan

This course aims to give a broad outline of a number of Japanese musical genres, along with an understanding of the way in which the musical styles exist within Japanese culture. Emphasis will also be placed on the cultural and geographical position of Japan within the larger context of East Asia. The course will take a practical approach, with frequent demonstrations, and the opportunity to try out several Japanese instruments. No particular musical or linguistic skills are needed to take the course.

Music in the European Tradition

This course gives an outline of the history of music in the European tradition until ca. 1900. Through active listening to representative examples of each period, the course aims to raise students' understanding of elements, forms and styles of music as well as their social and historical backgrounds.

Basic Theory of Music I

Introduction to Musicology

This course introduces methods of musicological study and history. In addition to traditional methods including source study, fieldwork, performing practice, music theory and analysis, the course also focuses on the recent theoretical trends. Students will also learn media and information literacy, writing and presentation skills for academic works.

Introduction to Organ Music

Lectures on the construction, history and repertory of the organ as well as a brief introduction to the performance, to deepen the understanding of organ music, Christian church music and culture through the knowledge and experience of the organ. Studies in Musical Composition

This course consists of two parts: 1) analysis of compositional methods and musical languages of historical masterpieces and 2) practical training in harmony and counterpoint. At the end of the course, students are encouraged to compose a musical piece in any style using any compositional technique. Completion of the Basic Study of Music II or equivalent knowledge and skills are prerequisite.

Introduction to Music Management

This course will study the meaning, role and concept of music management in society through actual cases from Japan and overseas, and discuss practical guidelines for future. Two periods of lecture and one period of practice weekly.

Music and Religion

This course will think about the ways that music is used in world religions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Shinto. We will look at the ways that music functions as a way of performing and transmitting scripture, facilitating rituals, and expressing ideas of the numinous. There will be numerous listening examples, and you will be expected to listen to music outside class time as part of assignments.

Music, stage and screen

This course looks at the western opera, musical theatre and film music from musicological perspectives. Analysing musical expressions in each major work, we will consider the historical and sociological significance of these arts.

Music of Modern Japan

This course will examine the history of music-making in Japan from the 20th century on. By considering genres such as Western classical music, jazz, and pop genres, as well as new innovations based on Japanese traditions, we will consider how modernity and Westernization have played out in Japan’s musical culture.

Basic Music Theory II

This course is the continuation of Basic Music Theory I. Students will learn four-part writing harmony with various chordal vocabularies, rudiments of contrapuntal writing, form and style theories, as well as theories of modality and atonality. Those students who have familiarity with elementary concepts of music theory (keys, meters, intervals, transposition, modulation, etc.) through singing or playing experience may start from this course without completing Basic Music Theory I.

Music Fieldwork Theory and Practice

This course will provide readings on Musicological fieldwork theory and practice and consider different approaches to writing musical ethnographies. During the second half of the term, we will go out on a number of fieldwork trips in Tokyo, and write up the results as a group project. Students are expected to have taken several music and/or anthropology classes at ICU.

Advanced Studies in Music

An intensive study of music theory and literature. Assignments are given regularly. To take this course, sufficient knowledge of music history and theory are necessary. It is desirable that students take all music major courses in the 100 and 200-levels. Open only to students who are permitted by the instructor.

Advanced Studies in Musical Analysis and Composition

This course helps students who have already acquired basic knowledge of music theory and analysis, to develop further their understanding of compositional principals, musical languages and techniques of Western art music. The course consists of two part: 1) advanced practice of harmony, counterpoint, free composition and musical analysis, and 2) study of music theory writings. Completion of Basic Study of Music II and/or Studies in Musical Composition, or equivalent knowledge and skills are prerequisites.

Senior Thesis

Senior students, under the guidance of an advisor, will select a subject related to their major and prepare a senior thesis. The final product should represent the efforts of one year of sustained and rigorous thinking, research, and writing. Required of all students in their senior year.
