Each year the course will take an in-depth look at one or more of the following sorts of topics: Japanese colonialism, Japanese-American relations in the 1930s, the Nanking Incident and other wartime atrocities, the decision behind Pearl Harbor, the role of propaganda in the United States and Japan, the decision to drop the Atomic Bombs, the occupation of Japan, the Tokyo War Crimes Trial, the preservation of the emperor system, and the meaning of postwar Japan.

This course takes a broad look at areas of conflict and accommodation between major intellectual discourses in Japan: Confucianism, Shintoism, Buddhism, and Christianity. Problems associated with the introduction of Christianity, first in the 16th century and later in the 19th century, will be highlighted as will the intellectual origins of concepts such as guilt and sin, life and death, heaven and hell, love and humanity.
